1. Which specialist should I consult for undergoing pericardiectomy surgery?

The surgery will be done by a cardiothoracic surgeon.

2. Do all cases of constrictive pericarditis require surgery?

If the inflammation of the pericardium occurs over a short period of time i.e. within 3-6 months and the constriction of the heart is not severe, it may respond to medications.

However for chronic or recurrent cases, surgery is usually the answer.

3. How long will I be required to stay in the hospital?

It may be necessary to stay in hospital for at least a week after surgery.


4. What is the recovery period after pericardiectomy?

Most patients begin to feel better immediately after surgery. However recovery from surgery and full activities may take 6-8 weeks. The recovery will be delayed in older persons and those with underlying illnesses.

5. Do I need regular monitoring after a pericardiectomy surgery?

After the initial followup, you may need an echocardiogram that evaluates your heart condition about six weeks later. Subsequent followup will be as your doctor advises.

6. Is it safe to undergo heart surgeries for other conditions after pericardiectomy?

After pericardiectomy, scar tissue forms around the heart and between the heart and lungs and heart and diaphragm. This makes surgery difficult and challenging but can be done by experienced and skilled cardiothoracic surgeons.
