The design phase includes both hardware and software design. The hardware design deals with the following: biomedical instrumentation and data acquisition of biomedical parameters in telemonitoring. The biomedical instrument is for the desired medical parameters such as ECG (Electrocardiogram), PCG (Phonocardiogram), Pressure, Pulse, Respiration and Temperature.
The software design deals with the following: capturing of biomedical signals, a database management system for the patient’s medical history and other related information and a visual monitoring system. The biomedical signals must be captured into the server system from the parallel port. The use of parallel ports for transfer has a number of advantages. Parallel ports are the easiest to use and to work with. They are capable of faster data transfer with greater reliability. The parallel port functions by sending its information in eight separate parallel signal wires. Though parallel transfer is expected to be eight times faster than serial data transfer, in practice, the speed increase is much greater. A database management system is needed to maintain the patient medical history and other related information. This aid in assigning identifiers to every patient for secure access by the specialist side. The visual monitoring system is required for the monitoring of the signals at the server’s end before transmission to the desired remote site.An important part of the design phase is networking and the intranet, internet programming. The network side programming deals with the transmission of signals from the server side provided the client’s IP address or address name is known. The biomedical signals are sent through Messenger on the Internet from the local host and these signals are reconstructed and obtained from the Messenger at the remote host.
