With the rapid growth in telecommunications and computer technology over the last few years, telemedicine has become an important part of medical development, with the potential to greatly improve the quality of future health care. Telemedicine systems can allow medical professionals in regional and rural hospitals and clinics to draw on the resources of major medical centers. Internet now holds the promise of providing this type of interaction at much lower cost. One of the objectives of the proposed project is to utilize the latest powerful, yet inexpensive, technological developments such as sensors and transducers, computers and application software. When monitoring a patient, preset high and low alarm settings can enable a person who is not versed in medicine to check for discrepancies, if any occur. This makes it user friendly as well. This instrument is portable and hence can be used in various situations such as during surgery, in the intensive care unit and even at home. Since shock hazards due to leakage of currents are avoided, it is safe for any situation.
The multifunctional virtual instrument will accomplish the following goals. Firstly, it will acquire measured data with high speed and accuracy. Secondly, it will interactively process and analyze measured data for immediate use or for post-processing. Thirdly, it will interactively display the raw/measured and processed/analyzed data in graphical and/ or numerical forms.
The proposed all-purpose Telemedicine system will have a number of features which are given below. First of all, it replaces the multiple stand-alone devices at the cost of a single instrument using virtual instrumentation technology. Its functionality is expandable. Then, the instrument facilitates the extraction of valuable diagnostic information using embedded advanced biomedical signal processing algorithms. Finally, the instrument is connected to the Internet to create an Internet-based Telemedicine infrastructure.
