Description Of Proposed System

Prof. T.R.Natesan

The hardware interface to the PC at the patient’s side consists of a sensor system, signal conditioners and filters.

Sensor System:

The sensor system includes a light source and an LDR detector. This converts the optical signal into the electronic signal. This signal is then applied to the signal conditioning. This module measures pulse rate, and can be used for a variety of other applications, simply by placing the Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) at various locations on the surface of the body.

The sensor operates on a photo-densitometry principle, which when utilized to measure pulsatile blood flow by optical densitometry, can detect changes in peripheral blood flow and produce an AC coupled signal that closely resembles an ECG of that same event. The system consists of the infrared light source and LDR. The light is emitted and received by the photo emitter and the photo sensor mounted in the transducer head. As opaque blood components flow through the light path, they partially obstruct the beam to generate the signal. The sensor system forms the most important part of the pulse rate monitor. The sensor system consists of an infrared source and an infrared source detector. Though there are various optical sources, infrared bulbs are used as infrared rays are absorbed depending upon the variation in the amount of blood flow. Infrared bulbs are effective and suitable for sensing the variation in blood. The sensor used in the proposed project must be sensitive to infrared radiation.
