Test : Pinworm Preparation
Indications : The test is ordered when a person presents with itching in the anal region and the doctor suspects pinworm infection.
A simple way to diagnose pinworm infection is by focusing a flashlight onto the anal region. The tiny, thread-like, white -colored
worms can be detected by means of the flash light. If not, repeat the procedure for three more nights.
The most reliable method is the scotch tape method whereby the sticky side of a strip of cellophane (one inch) is pressed firmly to the anal region for a matter of few seconds in the morning before taking bath.
The eggs, if present, would stick to the tape and these may be transferred to a glass slide to be examined under the microscope. The test has to be done on three different days to enhance the chances of proper diagnosis.
No preparation is required prior to the test.
Physiology : A pinworm test is carried out to detect infection caused by the pinworms which are small, thin worms that live as parasites in the human intestines. Pinworms commonly cause
infections in young children but they may be present in adults too.
Pinworm infections are brought about by ingesting the eggs of these
parasites. This happens when an infected person scratches the anal region and touches a surface, or food or another person next to him, with the same hand.
Adult pinworms exist in the intestine and colon of humans. During the night, the adult female pinworms migrate downward and deposit their eggs near the rectum or anal region.
Normal Range : No pinworm eggs identified
Interpretation : Normal
No pinworm eggs will be present on the tape.
Abnormal
Presence of adult pinworms or eggs on the tape indicates pinworm infection.
If infection is detected the individual along with entire family will have to be tested and treated. This is because these worms and their eggs are likely to be passed on to members of a family who live in close proximity to one another.
Pinworm infections are also commonly seen in camps, schools or day care centers where people live or segregate in groups.
