Why is Benztropine Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an anticholinergic agent, prescribed for Parkinson disease, tremor and stiffness of muscles. It decreases acetyl-choline effects in the brain.

When should Benztropine not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated to known hypersensitivity and in children.

What is the dosage of Benztropine?

PO- The recommended dose is 1 to 2 mg/day, with a range of 0.5 to 6 mg orally or parenterally.

How should Benztropine be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth and solution for injection, to be administered by a health care provider.

What are the warnings and precautions for Benztropine?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of kidney or liver disease, increased eye pressure, heart or blood pressure problems, myasthenia gravis, urinary tract disease, enlarged prostate, or stomach problem, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• Patient may develop with an increased risk of painful urination, fast heart rate, mental confusion, involuntary movement, increased eye pressure; if it so stop the medication.

• It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

What are the side effects of Benztropine?

Heart- Fast heart rate.
Gastrointestinal- Paralytic ileus (paralysis of intestinal muscle), constipation, vomiting, nausea, dry mouth, difficulty in swallowing or speaking, loss of appetite and weight.
Central Nervous System- Toxic psychosis (mental disorder); including confusion, disorientation, memory impairment, visual hallucinations, exacerbation of pre-existing psychotic symptoms, nervousness, depression and numbness of fingers.
Eye- Blurred vision and dilated pupil.
Genitourinary- Urinary retention and painful urination.
Metabolic - Occasionally, an allergic reaction, e.g., skin rash may develop.
Miscellaneous - Heat stroke and fever.

Avoid exposure to sunlight; otherwise it will lead to heat stroke.
