Why is Buserelin Prescribed? (Indications)
This medication is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist, prescribed for prostate cancer and breast cancer. It controls the release of eggs from ovaries by stopping the production of natural hormones.When should Buserelin not be taken? (Contraindications)
Contraindicated in patients with hormone-dependent tumors, pituitary adenoma, weight-related amenorrhoea (absence of menstrual period).What is the dosage of Buserelin?
SC- Advanced prostate carcinoma- Initial: 500 mcg 8 hourly for 7 days. Maintenance: 200 mcg once daily. Depot 6.3 mg implant 8 weekly or 9.45 mg 12 weekly.Pituitary desensitisation before ovulation induction with gonadotrophins- 200-500 mcg/day until pituitary downregulation occurs, usually for 1-3 week.
Pituitary desensitisation before ovulation induction with gonadotrophins- 150 mcg 4 times/day beginning on day 1 or day 21 of the menstrual cycle until pituitary downregulation occurs, usually for 1-3 weeks.
For nasal dosage forms: Adults: 200 micrograms (mcg) (2 sprays) into each nostril every eight hours.

Central Nervous System - Headache, lightheadedness, mood changes and nervousness.Heart - Palpitations.
Skin - Pimples, dry skin, itching, allergic reactions, changes in scalp and body hair.
Musculoskeletal - Tumor flare (may manifest as increase in bone pain) and spinal cord compression.
Genitourinary - Women- Worsening of urinary tract symptoms, blood in urine, increase in menstrual bleeding, urinary obstruction, vaginal dryness, hot flushes, loss of libido and osteoporosis.
Men- Hot flushes, breast swelling, tenderness and sexual dysfunction.
