Why is Cemiplimab-rwlc Prescribed? (Indications)

Cemiplimab-rwlc is prescribed to treat cutaneous squamous skin cancer with tumors that are either locally advanced or that have moved to other body parts. It is used in patients who cannot be treated by radiation and surgery.

Cemiplimab-rwlc is a monoclonal antibody that blocks specific receptors and chemical pathways resulting in reduced immune response with subsequent tumor growth reduction.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is found to be the second most common form of skin cancer with more than 200,000 cases reported every year in the United States alone.

When should Cemiplimab-rwlc not be taken? (Contraindications)

Cemiplimab-rwlc should not be used in patients-

• If there is an allergy to cemiplimab-rwlc
• Pregnant and breastfeeding women
• Children

What is the dosage of Cemiplimab-rwlc?

The recommended adult dose of cemiplimab-rwlc is 350 mg for every three weeks.

The dose of cemiplimab-rwlc can either be reduced or the treatment can be permanently discontinued based on the severity of the side effects.

The treatment with cemiplimab-rwlc can be continued until the patient shows any progression of the disease or till the treatment with cemiplimab-rwlc does not result in intolerable toxicity.

How should Cemiplimab-rwlc be taken?

Cemiplimab-rwlc is available in a liquid form which should be given only by a healthcare provider as an intravenous infusion directly into the vein very slowly for at least 30 minutes.

The required amount of cemiplimab-rwlc to be injected should be diluted with 0.9% sodium chloride or 5 % dextrose solution and mixed by gentle inversion.

The vial and the diluted solution of cemiplimab-rwlc should be visually checked for any visible particles or coloration before injecting. The contents should be disposed of if such discoloration or changes occur.

  • Patients should be advised to contact the doctor if any symptoms and signs of colitis such as loose stools, stomach pain, and presence of blood in stools occur.

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, loose stools, constipation, loss of appetite, pancreatitis, stomach pain, blood in stools, colitis
Respiratory: Cough, chest pain, breathing difficulty, pneumonitis
Skin: Rash, itching, skin redness, mouth ulcers
Musculoskeletal: Muscle pain, back pain, neck pain, pain in the legs or hands
Lab abnormalities: Low levels of red blood cells, lymphocytes, albumin, sodium, calcium, and phosphate. High levels of liver enzymes
Others: Nephritis, thyroid disorders, type 1 diabetes, hypophysitis or swelling of the pituitary glands, liver damage, abnormal heartbeat, weakness
