Why is Cenegermin-bkbj Prescribed? (Indications)
Cenegermin-bkbj eye drops are used to treat moderate or severe disease of the cornea called neurotrophic keratitis. Neurotrophic keratitis is a rare degenerative disease.Neurotrophic keratitis results in corneal thickening and ulceration, or perforation. It affects less than five in 10,000 people.
Cenegermin-bkbj is a recombinant form of human nerve growth factor works by repairing the damage caused to the eye surface and helps to restore the normal healing process of the eye.
When should Cenegermin-bkbj not be taken? (Contraindications)
Cenegermin-bkbj should not be used in patients-• If there is an allergy to cenegermin-bkbj
• An urgent requirement to undergo eye surgery
• Children under 18 years of age (as safety and effectiveness were not studied in these age groups)
Caution is required if cenegermin-bkbj eye drops are prescribed in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
What is the dosage of Cenegermin-bkbj?
• The recommended dose of cenegermin-bkbj (0.002% or 20 mcg/ml) is one drop to be instilled into one or both the affected eyes six times a day.• Cenegermin-bkbj should be instilled at an interval of 2 hours starting from the morning and must be applied within 12 hours. The treatment with cenegermin-bkbj should be continued for eight weeks.
How should Cenegermin-bkbj be taken?
• Cenegermin-bkbj is an eye drop in which the vial adapter should be gently pushed down until the spike of the adapter pierces the vial’s rubber stopper.• Do not remove the vial adapter once it is connected to the rubber stopper.
• While using a pipette to apply the eye drops, gently clean the vial’s rubber stopper with a disinfectant and allow it to dry for a minute.
• Screw the pipette in a clockwise manner and turn the vial upside down. Gently pull the required eye solution into the pipette and unscrew by rotating in an anticlockwise direction. Pull straight to remove the pipette.
• Lie down or sit by tilting your head back and apply the eye drop without touching the surface of the eye.
• Blinking frequently can help the cenegermin-bkbj eye drops to cover the surface of the eye.
• If another eye drop is prescribed along with cenegermin-bkbj eye drops, there should be a gap of 15 minutes between the application to avoid dilution and overflow of another eye drop.
• Cenegermin-bkbj eye drops when prescribed with any other viscous eye drops, eye gel or ointment, cenegermin-bkbj eye drops should be applied first.
• Use a separate pipette for each eye, if cenegermin-bkbj eye drops are used for both eyes.
Missed a Dose?
• If a dose of cenegermin-bkbj is missed, continue the treatment schedule as usual by instilling the eye drops at the next scheduled time.• Do not apply or instill the missed dose as it may result in overdose.
What are the warnings and precautions for Cenegermin-bkbj?
• Contact lens should be removed before applying cenegermin-bkbj eye drops as the contact lens will limit the distribution of the eye drops onto the corneal area. Contact lens can be reinserted after 15 minutes from the time of administration.• Mild to moderate eye discomfort can occur along with eye pain during the treatment with cenegermin-bkbj eye drops. So, patients must be advised to consult their eye specialist if any severe eye reaction occurs.
• Caution is required while treating patients with eye cancer, as there is a possibility of worsening of the existing cancerous condition of the eye.
• Patients treated with cenegermin-bkbj should be monitored for any disease progression of eye cancer during and after the treatment with cenegermin-bkbj.
• Any active infection of the eyes should be treated first before treating with cenegermin-bkbj eye drops. If any eye infection occurs during the treatment, cenegermin-bkbj should be stopped temporarily unless the infection is healed.
• Patients instilled with Cenegermin-bkbj eye drops should wait for few minutes before carrying out skilled tasks (e.g., driving or operating heavy machinery) as it can cause a temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances which can last for few minutes.
• Patients must be assessed for any risk of corneal complications or damage to the corneal surface such as melting or perforation before initiating the treatment with cenegermin-bkbj eye drops as these risks require immediate surgery.
What are the side effects of Cenegermin-bkbj?
The most common side effects of cenegermin-bkbj eye drops are-• Pain and irritation of the eye
• Increased tear secretion
• Swelling of the eye
• Presence of foreign body sensation in the eye

Steroids and other eye drops that contain preservatives such as cetrimide, benzalkonium chloride, Polyquaternium-1, quaternary ammonium derivatives, and benzododecinium bromide should not be used with cenegermin-bkbj eye drops as these may interfere with the corneal healing.What are the storage conditions for Cenegermin-bkbj?
• The weekly carton containing vials of cenegermin-bkbj should be supplied to the pharmacy in an insulated pack kept in the delivery system unit stored at a freezer or temperature of -20°C.• Store the weekly carton containing seven vials of cenegermin-bkbj eye drops in the refrigerator between 2°C to 8°C within 5 hours of leaving the pharmacy when given to the patient.
• Remove only the required vial from the weekly carton and do not shake or freeze the vial.
• The opened vials can be kept either at room temperature (below 25°C) or in a refrigerator (between 2°C to 8°C).
• Discard the vial containing any unused portion of cenegermin-bkbj eye drops after 12 hours.
