Why is Desvenlafaxine Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), prescribed for depression. It increases serotonin and norepinephrine level, which are used to maintain mental balance.

When should Desvenlafaxine not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients who are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Desvenlafaxine?

PO- The recommended dose is 50 mg once daily.

How should Desvenlafaxine be taken?

It comes as an extended release tablet to take by mouth, with or without food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Desvenlafaxine?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of bleeding problems, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, increased eye pressure, epilepsy, low sodium levels in the blood, heart, kidney or liver disease, who are taking other medications, any allergy, elderly, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

• Avoid alcohol consumption.

Patient may develop with increased risk of behavior changes or suicidal thoughts and Serotonin Syndrome with the following symptoms: restlessness, diarrhea, fast heart beat, incoordination, nausea, vomiting. If it is so consult with your healthcare provider.

Most Common- Nausea, dizziness, sleeplessness, excessive sweating, constipation, drowsiness, decreased appetite, anxiety and specific male sexual function disorders.
Heart - Palpitations, fast heart rate and high blood pressure.
Gastrointestinal - Dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting.
General - Fatigue, chills, bruxism, uneasiness and weakness.
Metabolic - Decreased appetite and weight.
Central Nervous system - Headache, tremor, tingling, disturbance in attention, nervousness, irritability and abnormal dreams.
Genitourinary - Urinary hesitation.
Respiratory - Yawning and nose bleed.
Skin - Excessive sweating and rash.
Eye and ENT - Blurred vision, dilation of the pupil, ringing in the ear and loss of taste.
Musculoskeletal- Muscle stiffness.
Miscellaneous- Hot flush and severe allergic reactions.
