Overview of Ethacridine

• Ethacridine is used for second-trimester abortion and is also used as an antiseptic.

Why is Ethacridine Prescribed? (Indications)

Ethacridine is used for second-trimester abortion between the thirteenth and the twentieth week of gestation.
The abortion usually occurs between 20 and 40 hours after instillation of the drug. It is sometimes combined with a prostaglandin or oxytocin for a quicker effect.

It is also used locally as an antiseptic on open or infected wounds.

When should Ethacridine not be taken? (Contraindications)

• Ethacridine is contraindicated if the patient is allergic to the drug.
• It should also not to be used in pregnant women for purposes other than abortion.

What is the dosage of Ethacridine?

For abortion: 10 ml of 0.1% ethacridine /gestational week up to a maximum of 150 ml.

For infection: 2% of powder and ointment, or 5% of paste for local application.
