Why is Maraviroc Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an antiretroviral agent, prescribed for HIV infection (CCR5-tropic HIV-1 detectable). It works by blocking the virus from entering cells.

When should Maraviroc not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with severe kidney problems, who are taking St. John's wort, and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Maraviroc?

Adult- The recommended dose is 1 300 mg tablet, two times a day.

How should Maraviroc be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Maraviroc?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of low blood pressure, dizziness, hepatitis B or C, liver, heart or kidney disease, who are on dialysis, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children less than 16 years old, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, do not drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.

• Avoid alcohol consumption.

• Avoid contact with people who have infections.

• Patient may develop with increased risk of cancer; consult with your doctor about this risk before taking this medication.

• It does not stop the spread of HIV to others; avoid sexual contact, sharing of needles, or injection supplies.

Patient may develop Immune Reconstitution Syndrome.
