Why is Nafarelin Prescribed? (Indications)
This medication is a long acting gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH agonist) used to treat symptoms of endometriosis, uterine fibroid, and in assisted reproduction. It is also used to treat central precocious puberty (early puberty) in young boys and girls.When should Nafarelin not be taken? (Contraindications)
Hypersensitivity, undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, pregnancy and breastfeeding.What is the dosage of Nafarelin?
Adult: Nasal Endometriosis- 200 µg two times/day starting on days 2-4 of the menstrual cycle; may continue for up to 6 month.Precocious Puberty- 1600 µg/day. Max: 1800µg/day.Uterine fibroid 200 µg two times/day.
How should Nafarelin be taken?
It comes as a nasal spray, once a day as two sprays in each nostril each morning.What are the warnings and precautions for Nafarelin?
• Do not use in patients with risk factors for decreased bone mineral density.Ovarian cysts may occur during the first 2 month of therapy, more commonly in women with polycystic ovarian disease.
Monitor patient regularly, especially during the first 6-8 week of therapy to ensure patient compliance and adequate response.
Determine bone age and growth velocity within 3-6 month of initiation of therapy and periodically thereafter.
What are the side effects of Nafarelin?
Most Common- Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, headaches, mood changes, breast enlargement, and decreased interest in sex, vaginal bleeding, increase in pubic hair, sweating.Miscellaneous- Acne, muscle pain, reduced breast size, irritation of the nose, depression, convulsion, stomach pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, rash, severe itching, allergic reaction, osteoporosis. Rare cases of pituitary apoplexy (due to infarction of the pituitary) have been observed in patients on nafarelin.
What are the other precautions for Nafarelin?
Do not use topical nasal decongestant for at least 2 hour after nafarelin administration.Do not stop the medication, without your healthcare provider's advice.
