Why is Orphenadrine Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a skeletal muscle relaxant, prescribed for discomfort associated with acute painful musculoskeletal conditions.  It works by helping to decrease the pain.

When should Orphenadrine not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with increased eye pressure, intestinal obstruction and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Orphenadrine?

PO- 150mg daily in divided doses increased by 50mg every 2-3 days. Maintenance dose of 150-300mg daily.
IV/IM- Adults - One 2 mL ampul (60 mg); may be repeated every 12 hours.

How should Orphenadrine be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Orphenadrine?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of enlarged prostate, increased eye pressure, intestinal blockage, difficulty in swallowing, myasthenia gravis, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness, do not drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.

• Avoid alcohol consumption.

Most Common - Agitation, drowsiness, dizziness, emotion, hallucinations, headache and mental confusion.
Gastrointestinal - Constipation, gastric irritation, nausea and vomiting.
Heart - Palpitations and fast heart rate.
Genitourinary - Urination hesitancy and urinary retention.
Eye and ENT - Blurred vision, increased eye pressure, night blindness, pupil dilatation and nasal congestion.
