Why is Psoralen (PUVA) Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is also called as PUVA, a natural product, prescribed for eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo and mycosis fungoides.

When should Psoralen (PUVA) not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with skin cancer, children and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Psoralen (PUVA)?

The recommended dose is 20 mg or up to 600 mcg/kg 2-4 hour before measured periods of sunlight or UVA exposure twice weekly or on alternate days, with at least 48-hour intervals between doses.

How should Psoralen (PUVA) be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take orally and lotion to apply topically, with food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Psoralen (PUVA)?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver impairment, photosensitivity, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• Avoid exposure to sunlight and patient should wear sunglasses for 24 hours after administration.

• Cover male genital area during the treatment.

• Perform eye exam prior to therapy and at regular intervals thereafter, especially in those at increased risk of cataracts.
