Why is Sarecycline Prescribed? (Indications)

Sarecycline tablets are prescribed to treat pimples. It is used to treat pimples or acne vulgaris of non-nodular type that are moderate to severe. Generally it can be used for anyone who is nine years.

Sarecycline is a tetracycline-derived narrow spectrum antibiotic used and has been found to be effective in reducing the inflammation in the pimples that are non-nodular type.

When should Sarecycline not be taken? (Contraindications)

Sarecycline should not be used in patients-

• If there is an allergy to sarecycline or other tetracyclines
• To treat other infections
• Children below nine years of age
• Pregnant and breastfeeding women
• Low sperm count

What is the dosage of Sarecycline?

The recommended dose of sarecycline is based on individual patients’ body weight.

• Patients weighing 33 to 54 kg - 60 mg of sarecycline
• Patients weighing 55 to 84 kg - 100 mg of sarecycline
• Patients weighing 85 to 136 kg - 150 mg of sarecycline

Sarecycline should not be taken for more than 12 weeks and the treatment must be reassessed after the 12 week period, if there is no improvement.

The use of sarecycline requires doctor’s approval and should be prescribed only when it is needed to avoid the risk of tolerance or resistance to disease-causing bacteria.

How should Sarecycline be taken?

Sarecycline is available in a tablet form and should be taken by mouth once a day either with or without food.

Take the sarecycline tablets exactly as advised and do not break, chew, or split the tablet as the stability of the drug may get affected resulting in treatment failure.

Swallow the sarecycline tablets as a whole with a sufficient amount of water to avoid ulceration and irritation of the esophagus.

What are the warnings and precautions for Sarecycline?

• It is necessary to check the pregnancy status of women before initiating sarecycline therapy as it may affect the unborn baby and cause some abnormalities such as permanent teeth discoloration, deficiency of teeth enamel or enamel hypoplasia, and may slow down the bone growth.

• Patients must be advised to contact the doctor immediately if women become pregnant during the treatment with sarecycline.

• Men wishing to have a child in future should use a sperm bank facility before starting the sarecycline therapy as sarecycline treatment can affect the fertility status in the male.

• Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) can occur during the treatment and patients must be monitored for the presence of watery or bloody stools. Patients with such symptoms or signs should be treated appropriately with fluid and electrolyte management, protein supplementation, and antibiotic treatment for Clostridium difficile.

• If CDAD infection is confirmed, the treatment with sarecycline must be stopped. In severe cases, a surgeon opinion can also be considered.

• Sarecycline can cause dizziness or light-headedness. Therefore, patients must be advised not to get involved in tasks requiring mental alertness such as driving a vehicle, operating heavy machinery, or handling hazardous chemicals.

• Patients should be carefully observed and treated under specialist care for any symptoms and signs of intracranial hypertension such as blurred vision or a headache.

What are the side effects of Sarecycline?

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, watery or bloody stools, stomach pain, stomach irritation
Nervous system: Light-headedness, vertigo, headache, dizziness, abnormal pressure in the brain
Others: Reversible bone growth, blurred vision, vision loss, sunburn, rashes, decreased sperm count

What are the other precautions for Sarecycline?

If superinfection such as the growth of micro-organisms including fungi occurs, the treatment with sarecycline should be discontinued and the patients must be treated accordingly.

Sunburns have been reported during sarecycline treatment, and patients should be advised to avoid or minimize the exposure to direct sunlight, tanning beds, and therapy with Ultraviolet A or B (UV A/B) radiations.

What are the Drug Interactions of Sarecycline?

Avoid taking sarecycline along with oral retinoids such as isotretinoin and acitretin as the combination can build pressure inside the brain.

Iron preparations and antacids containing aluminum, calcium, bismuth, and magnesium should not be taken along with sarecycline as these may affect the absorption of sarecycline.

Penicillin taken with sarecycline may interfere with the antibacterial action; therefore such combinations should be avoided.

The dose of blood thinners should be reduced when given with sarecycline as there is a possibility of increased risk of bleeding.
