Why is Saxagliptin and Metformin Prescribed? (Indications)

This combination medication contains two oral antihyperglycemic medications (a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor and biguanide), prescribed for type 2 diabetes.  It is not for treating type 1 diabetes. It works by decreasing glucose (sugar) production in the liver and by regulating the levels of insulin.

When should Saxagliptin and Metformin not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney impairment, and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Saxagliptin and Metformin?

PO- The recommended initial dose is (metformin-saxagliptin 500 mg-5 mg) 1 tablet once daily.

How should Saxagliptin and Metformin be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with the evening meal.
