Why is Senna Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a stimulant laxative, prescribed for constipation. It works by softening the stool and increasing water content to allow easier passage of the stool.

When should Senna not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with nausea, vomiting or other symptoms of appendicitis, acute surgical abdomen, fecal impaction, intestinal obstruction and undiagnosed abdominal pain.

What is the dosage of Senna?

Adults – Oral: 2 tablets, 1 tsp of granules or 10 to 15 mL of syrup, usually at bedtime.
Child: 1 tablet or ½ tsp granules PO or ½ suppository PR . Liquid dose ranges from 1.25 to 15 mL depending on age and product formulation, at bed time.

How should Senna be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, on an empty stomach.
