Why is Vilazodone Hydrochloride Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, prescribed for major depressive disorder (MDD). It increases the serotonin level in the brain that helps to maintain mental balance.

When should Vilazodone Hydrochloride not be taken? (Contraindications)

It should not be used concomitantly with an MAOI or within 14 days of use of this medication.

PO- The recommended dose is 40 mg once daily.

What are the warnings and precautions for Vilazodone Hydrochloride?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of low blood volume, low blood pressure, dehydration, low-salt diet, bipolar disorder, mental problems, suicidal thoughts, alcohol abuse, liver, kidney, bleeding problems, seizures, who are taking other medications, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

• Avoid alcohol consumption.

• Patient may develop with increased risk of suicidal thoughts; watch them carefully.

• It should not be used in children.

• Patient may develop with increased risk neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), and serotonin syndrome with the following symptoms: depressed mood, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, panic attacks, fever, stiff muscles, confusion, abnormal thinking, fast or irregular heartbeat. If it is so consult with your doctor.
