Blood is a tissue that is produced in a cavity of the bone; called bone marrow. Bone marrow produces three type of blood cells; RBCs, WBCs and platelets. Diseases affecting bone marrow can cause derangement of number or function of these blood cells. Like very high level of RBCs can cause increase thickness of blood and can cause clotting of blood while very low level of RBCs can cause significant tiredness/weakness. Very low level of WBC or very high level can be found in blood cancers and cause recurrent severe infections and can be fatal. Very low level of platelets can cause bleeding; even fatal bleeding in brain while very high platelets can cause clotting of blood. Spectrum of disorders of hematology includes non-cancerous blood diseases, cancerous diseases and bone marrow transplant. Non-cancerous blood diseases include iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, G-6PD deficiency, Hereditary spherocytosis, Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), immune cytopenia, immune thrombocytopenia, hereditary platelet disorders.
