Triclabendazole (Tricloben) is an anthelmintic and the drug of choice recommended by the World Health Organization for the treatment of fascioliasis (a parasitic worm infection caused by the common liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica.
It is a benzimidazole compound that is active against immature and adult Fasciola parasites.
It is also used to treat another food-borne parasitic infection known as paragonimiasis caused by the lung fluke, most commonly Paragonimus westermani.
Triclabendazole (Tricloben) is widely used only in developing countries and is not directly approved by the FDA for use in the US. It can be distributed in the US through a special arrangement with the FDA and the manufacturer on an individual patient approval basis.
