When and How to Take Valproic acid
- Valproic acid is available in the form of a capsule, a sprinkle capsule (capsules containing small beads of medication that can be sprinkled on food), an extended-release and delayed-release tablets and syrup to be taken orally.
- The syrup, capsules, delayed-release tablets and sprinkle capsules are usually taken twice daily or more.
- The extended-release tablets are usually taken once a day.
- Swallow the capsules as a whole instead of crushing, chewing or breaking them.
- Take the medication at the same time every day for better results.
- Follow the directions exactly as given on the prescription label.
- Do not exceed or skip a dose. If you miss it, take the medication as soon as you remember.
- Do not double the dose at a time to compensate for a missed dose.
