Ethylene glycol is a chemical which is used as an antifreeze and in chemical synthesis.

Physiology :


Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, sweet tasting compound used commercially as an antifreeze. It is the cause of accidental poisonings and also used in suicide attempts.

Critical Values :


Values between 0.3-4.0 g/L has been found in fatal cases. Levels at 0.5 g/L may indicate hemodialysis.

Test Method :


Gas Liquid Chromotography (GLC), Photometry.

Interpretation :


A dosage of 100 mL is lethal and requires rapid treatment to prevent death. Toxicity can cause CNS depression, cardiopulmonary symptoms and renal damage.
