How to Take Ferric Maltol and it's Dose


Ferric maltol is to be taken orally. It is available as 30 mg capsule.

Dosage & When it is to be taken

The recommended dose is 30 mg to be taken twice daily, 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
The drug should be taken on empty stomach, as food decreases the absorption of ferric maltol.
Duration of therapy depends on the severity of iron deficiency but usually at least 3 months of treatment is required.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications)

1. Hypersensitivity to Ferric maltol
2. Patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
3. Patients with hemochromatosis (Hemochromatosis is a disorder where too much iron builds up in the body) and iron overload syndromes.

What if you Miss a Dose of Ferric Maltol?

In case of missing a dose, the drug should be taken as soon as you remember.
