Risk factors for subsequent development of Epilepsy
a. Antecedent abnormal neurologic or developmental status.
b. A family history of afebrile seizures
c. Complex or atypical febrile seizures
Presence of a single or no risk factor is associated with less than 2% chance of developing afebrile seizures. With 2 or 3 risk factors the association is 6-10%. Further, each feature of seizure complexity (length > 15 minutes, multiple or focal) increases risk of developing subsequent epilepsy. The presence of all the 3 atypical features is associated with > 50% risk for subsequent epilepsy.
