Drug abuse is the compulsive misuse of illegal drugs, prescription medications and psychoactive substances due to medical or non-medical reasons. Every year June 26 is celebrated as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The day focuses on strengthening action and co-operation to achieve a drug abuse-free world. Cocaine, cannabis, amphetamine, opiates, alcohol, prescription painkillers, nicotine are the most commonly abused drugs. Globally around 246 million people are abusing drugs. United States has the highest number of drug-related deaths. Psychological effects of drug addiction include depression, anxiety, wild mood swings, depression, anxiety, violence. Drug use during pregnancy could lead to birth defects in babies. Addiction rehabilitation process helps drug addicts prepare to re-enter the society.
