MANCHESTER, N.H., Oct. 15 Each year, millions of Americans become sick with the flu, resulting not only in lost workplace productivity and days lost from school, but also countless hours of personal pain and suffering. Yet, despite these costs, many do not realize that their yearly battle with the flu could be prevented through a simple vaccination. That's why Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in New Hampshire (Anthem) is teaming up with health care providers and businesses local throughout the state to promote the importance of flu shots in preventing illness.

On Wednesday, October 20, locations throughout New Hampshire will offer flu shots on a walk-in basis at a minimal cost.
"The flu is a common illness, but it is a serious illness," said Richard Lafleur, M.D., Anthem's medical director. "Getting a flu shot is the single best thing you can do to reduce the likelihood you contract the flu this season. Best of all, flu shots are simple, widely available, and virtually painless. When it comes to the flu vaccine, the message is simple: plan it, schedule it, and get it."

"We are proud to partner with health care professionals throughout the state to improve the lives of the people we serve and the health of our communities," added Dr. Lafleur. "We know that preventative medicine is cost effective medicine, and flu shots are a great way for families and business owners to protect themselves from illness and possible medical expenses related to the seasonal flu."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 5 and 20 percent of all Americans are affected by the flu each season, and more 200,000 people are hospitalized as a result of the flu each year.
The CDC recommends all Americans six months old and older receive an annual flu vaccination. This year's flu shot includes protection against the 2009 H1N1 virus (sometimes referred to as the "swine flu"), meaning that one shot will provide protection against both the seasonal flu and H1N1.
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield members can receive their seasonal flu shot as a covered, preventative benefit at their doctor's office or other in-network health care provider. Members should check with their benefits administrator or contact the customer service number on the back of their insurance card prior to seeking care if they have questions about their insurance coverage or benefits.
In addition to the importance of receiving a flu shot, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is also encouraging everyone to practice improved hygiene habits as an added layer of protection during cold and flu season.
"Things like covering your mouth when you cough, properly disposing of tissues, staying home when you're sick, and practicing good hand washing habits really do make a difference and can help prevent the spread of illness," added Dr. Lafleur. "These should be everyday practices for all Americans, but cold and flu season is an especially good time to recommit to healthy habits for the sake of your health and the health of those around you."
Dr. Lafleur noted that there are a number of online resources available to those wishing to learn more, they include: flu.gov , cdc.gov, and www.breathenh.org. The state of New Hampshire has also set up a special website, please visit http://www.dhhs.nh.gov/dphs/cdcs/influenza/index.htm.
