Each year, two awardees -- one from the discipline of laboratory science and the other from patient-oriented research -- are selected from a group of candidates nominated by individuals whose careers they have helped shape.

Dr. Buchanan has been an influential figure for several individuals, ranging from high school students to senior medical investigators. He has been described as a constant mentor and he continues to support his mentees throughout their careers, helping them realize their potential. Dr. Buchanan currently serves as the Children's Cancer Fund Distinguished Chair in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, and Director of the Barrett Family Center for Pediatric Oncology.
"Many mentors are known and respected for their long histories of fostering the careers of laboratory-based scientists," said Charles T. Quinn, M.D., in his nomination letter. "George Buchanan, however, has a unique and special heritage. He has mentored a long line of clinicians and clinical scientists, and his mentees have become or are poised to become both clinical leaders in hematology and top-notch clinically-oriented researchers."
Dr. Ley, who is the Alan and Edith Wolff Professor of Medicine and Professor of Genetics at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, MO, is dedicated to guiding the next generation of physician-scientists and is willing to make sacrifices so that his students have every chance for success. "As a former trainee of Tim's, I can personally attest to his superb mentoring. He has set an extremely high standard of personal integrity, scientific rigor, and commitment to his trainees, and advocacy of scientific education that I continually strive to attain as I mentor my own students," said Daniel C. Link, M.D., in his nomination letter. "In short, I believe Tim epitomizes the ideal mentor."
Drs. Buchanan and Ley will be presented with their honors at an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. PST on Sunday, December 7, in the Moscone Center.
The American Society of Hematology (www.hematology.org) is the world's largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatment of blood disorders. Its mission is to further the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting blood, bone marrow, and the immunologic, hemostatic, and vascular systems, by promoting research, clinical care, education, training, and advocacy in hematology. In September, ASH launched Blood: The Vital Connection (www.bloodthevitalconnection.org), a credible online resource addressing bleeding and clotting disorders, anemia, and cancer. It provides hematologist-approved information about these common blood disorders including risk factors, preventive measures, and treatment options. A cornerstone of this public awareness campaign is a new documentary by award-winning filmmaker Joseph Lovett called "Blood Detectives," which will air on the Discovery Health cable network on December 19, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT and again at 12:00 midnight. The show focuses on hematologists as they work to unravel medical mysteries and save lives.
