CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J., Jan. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Sunshine Dentistry, recipient of the 2022 Best of Jersey Shore award for Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, and Cosmetic Dentistry, is now offering advanced oral appliances and oral devices for children and adults to treat obstructive sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing.

According to Sunshine Dentistry Founder, Dr. Eric V. Thomas, Diplomat of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), the risks of disrupted breathing while sleeping are now highly treatable without the need for masks or machines.

"I have spent many years researching the most effective, but minimally invasive treatments that ensure uninterrupted breathing while sleeping. I'm proud that Sunshine Dentistry offers the most advanced and effective oral appliances and devices to treat sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing," he said.

Sunshine Dentistry offers the Vivos® system which is a new approach to the treatment of sleep apnea, as it expands the space inside the mouth to prevent a narrow airway. "Obstructive sleep apnea results from relaxing muscles in the throat while sleeping. When these muscles relax, it narrows the airway. The Vivos device is unique because it treats the underlying cause of sleep apnea, which is an underdeveloped jaw, resulting in a narrow airway. The Vivos device works by gradually expanding the roof of the mouth while adjusting the lower jaw slightly forward. It is a remarkable system," he said.

The all-age dental practice also offers the ProSomnus oral device, which is worn while sleeping. The ProSomnus oral appliance is a comfortable treatment, resembling a night guard, that fits over the top and lower arch of teeth. It positions the lower jaw in a slightly forward position to prevent obstruction in the airway.

"Sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing in children result in a failure to thrive, delayed development, and problems with concentration and attention. As we age, these conditions contribute to an increased risk of heart disease, and chronic illnesses including diabetes. Fortunately, these highly advanced, minimally invasive devices reduce those risks," Dr. Thomas said. Both treatments also reduce teeth grinding, and can mitigate pain in the jaw caused by a TMJ disorder.

"Preventative care is essential for good oral health and good overall health. We now understand just how vital it is to ensure that patients of all ages are getting sufficient, uninterrupted sleep. It is clear that treating sleep apnea and sleep disorders in children is necessary to maintain good long-term health. I'm thrilled that our practice gets to play a role in that process," Dr. Thomas said.

Sunshine Dentistry provides complete oral health care and dental care to patients of all ages. In addition to treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, and sleep-disordered breathing in children, the practice offers complete restorative care and cosmetic treatments.
