Anemia is a blood disorder caused by reduced hemoglobin level in the blood. It occurs mainly due to excessive blood loss, reduced production of red blood cell, iron-deficient diet, abnormalities in the upper gastrointestinal tract where most of the dietary iron is absorbed. To manage anemia, a diet rich in iron is a must. Heme iron that is obtained from animal foods and non-heme iron, obtained from plant foods are the two forms of dietary iron. They are best absorbed when combined with vitamin C.
