New test that can screen patients reliably for HIV using a saliva sample has been developed. Scientists published the details in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Early detection of HIV is necessary so that treatment can be initiated early and precautions can be taken to prevent the spread to others. Blood tests are currently the most sensitive in detecting HIV. These, however, need proper precautions and disposal of needles especially if the patient tests positive. It may not be possible to screen a large number of individuals through a blood test.
