Puliyodanam (Tamarind Rice)

Preparation

Ingredients

  • Tamarind 100 gm
  • Sesame oil 30 ml
  • Red Chilly 6 nos
  • Fenugreek 1 Spoon
  • Mustard 1 Spoon
  • Turmeric 2 Pinches
  • Salt To taste
  • Coriander Seeds 20 gm
  • Asafetida 2 Pinch
  • Rice Quantity sufficient

Method

  1. To prepare tamarind rice (Puliyodanam), first a spicy paste of tamarind (Pulikaachal) has to be prepared
  2. Preparation of Pulikaachal-
    • Soak tamarind in the warm water
    • Squeeze the tamarind juice into a thick consistency
    • Add turmeric powder, salt and roasted red chilly in it
    • Season mustard, fenugreek and asafetida using sesame oil
    • Add the tamarind paste into the seasoning
    • After it starts boiling, add roasted and peeled ground nuts
    • Then stir it continuously till it acquires a pastelike consistency
    • Towards the end, add roasted coriander powder to it and mix well
  3. Now take the cooked rice in a widemouthed bowl
  4. Add 1 spoon of sesame oil
  5. Add 2 3 spoons of Pulikaachal to the rice
  6. Mix them well and serve
