Sambaaram (Saambaar)

Ingredients

  • Tamarind – lemon size
  • Rock salt – to taste
  • Sambaar spice mix* – 3 spoons
  • 1 chopped vegetable – 250 gm (drumstick, small onions, Brinjal, carrot, lady’s finger, knol-knol, chow-chow etc.)
  • Turmeric powder – 1 pinch
  • Thoor dal – 1 cup
  • Mustard – 1 spoon
  • Asafoetida – 1 pinch
  • Fenugreek – 1 spoon
  • Urad dal – 1 spoon
  • Sesame oil – 1 spoon
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Coriander leaves – few

Preparation

  • Take tamarind and squeeze it in Water.
  • Add salt and Sambaar spice mix powder to it.
  • Add any one chopped vegetable to it.
  • Let it boil till the vegetable is cooked.
  • Then add cooked and smashed thoor dal to it.
  • Mix well.
  • Season it with, mustard, fenugreek, urad dal, asafoetida in sesame oil.
  • Garnish it with chopped coriander leaves and curry leaves.
  • Mix well and serve.

* Pepper – 1/4 part, coriander Seeds - 1 part, red chilly – ¾ parts, rice – 2 spoon, chickpea – ¼ part, few cumin seeds. All these powdered together is the sambar spice mix.
