Glossary

Acromegaly: An abnormal growth of the face, hands, and feet, caused by increased secretion of growth hormone by the pituitary gland.

Addison’s Disease: A disorder in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol.

Crouzon Syndrome: Also known as branchial arch syndrome, it is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder affecting the first branchial (or pharyngeal) arch, which is the precursor of the maxilla (upper jawbone) and mandible (lower jaw).

Cushing Syndrome: A condition characterized by fatty deposits around the face and upper back, weight gain around the mid-section, and fat loss from arms and legs, due to prolonged exposure to high cortisol levels.

Hyperinsulinemia: Elevated levels of insulin in the blood above normal values.

Lipodystrophy: A genetic or acquired disorder characterized by the inability of the body to produce and maintain healthy fatty tissue.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder in women which causes enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges and is often characterized by acne and facial hair.
