Glossary

Anemia: A condition in which the number of red blood cells is below normal.

Kidney disease: Any one of several chronic conditions that are caused by damage to the cells of the kidney. People who have had diabetes for a long time may have kidney damage. Also called nephropathy.

ACE inhibitors: Drugs used to lower the blood pressure and reduce the strain on the heart.

Erythropoietin: Produced in the adult kidney, a colony-stimulating factor that stimulates the production of red blood cells.

Hemodialysis: Removal of chemical waste from the blood using blood flow through an artificial kidney.

Hyperparathyroidism: Production of excess parathyroid hormones and low calcium level in the blood.

Iron: A mineral necessary for the formation of important biological substances such as haemoglobin, myoglobin, and certain enzymes.
