These symptoms are manifested in most pre-school and early school- going children at some level. Besides these symptoms may also be triggered by other disorders. Therefore they need to be thoroughly assessed by a qualified person in order to confirm the diagnosis of ADHD.
Some of the typical symptoms of an ADHD -affected individual are-

- Causing careless mistakes
- Not following instructions
- Losing / forgetting things easily
- Jumping from one activity to another, without completion
According to the 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders' there are three behavioral patterns that are consistent with ADHD. The affected childern may display several signs of being inattentive consistently. Alternatively, they may display a pattern of being hyperactive and impulsive more frequently than other children of their age. In some cases, all the three behavioral patterns are manifested.
Experts and professionals dealing with ADHD have identified three subtypes of the disorder. They are:
- Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type (no significant inattention shown)
- Predominantly inattentive type (no significant hyperactive-impulsive behavior shown)
- Combined type (inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms present).
