Myofascial pain syndrome may arise from trauma or overuse of a muscle.

The exact cause of myofascial pain syndrome is unknown. It may arise due to the mechanical stress on a muscle resulting in the formation of trigger points. Various factors that could result in the formation of trigger points include-

  • Trauma or injury to muscles
  • Genetic factors resulting in skeletal anomalies such as having different sizes of feet, toes or legs, spine curvature anomalies or some metabolic dysfunctions
  • The presence of inflammatory conditions
  • Excessive exercise or lack of exercise
