Causes of Premature Ejaculation

Causes of Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is often psychological in origin.

Ejaculation in males normally consists of two steps- emission and expulsion. During emission, fluid mainly from the prostate and seminal vesicles and sperms from the testes enter the urethra. Expulsion is the act of release of semen containing sperms from the urethra. Premature ejaculation is when the man ejaculates early, or is unable to delay the ejaculation till his partner is ready for the climax.

Premature ejaculation is classified as primary or secondary. Primary premature ejaculation is when it is present from the beginning and for which no specific cause can be found.

Secondary or acquired premature ejaculation is one in which a previously normal male begins to experience premature ejaculation. It is often secondary to certain problems or diseases and may also be associated with erectile dysfunction.

Causes for premature ejaculation are:

  • Psychological: Prior mental traumatic episodes may be associated with premature ejaculation. In addition, changes in the levels of chemicals in the brain or oversensitivity of the glans penis may also be associated with premature ejaculation.
  • Hormonal: Hormonal problems like thyroid disorders can cause premature ejaculation.

  • Prostatic problems: Problems with the prostate like chronic prostatitis can also cause premature ejaculation.
  • Genetic influence: A genetic influence has also been suggested in premature ejaculation.

Sometimes, it could be an instance of the female partner taking a long time to climax, or not climaxing at all, as opposed to a man ejaculating prematurely. This fact should also be kept in mind while evaluating a patient of premature ejaculation.
