Colles Fracture - Causes and Symptoms

Causes and Symptoms

Colle’s fracture mostly occurs as a result of vehicle accidents or when people fall backward onto a hardened surface with outstretched hands.

This fracture occurs at an inch or two proximal to the radio-carpal joint and results in the typical ‘dinner fork’ resembling deformity.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a Colle’s fracture include:

  • Pain – more if wrist is flexed
  • Tenderness when the bone is palpated
  • Swelling/bruising over the wrist joint area
  • Deformity of the wrist – which looks crooked like a dinner fork.
  • Numbness in the hand
  • Pale fingers
