Classification of Dandy Walker Syndrome

Classification of Dandy Walker Syndrome

Three types of Dandy-Walker complexes exist:

  • DWS malformation
  • DWS mega cisterna magna
  • DWS variant

DWS malformation is the most severe presentation. The variant is less severe than the malformation. Dandy-Walker Syndrome is often linked with disorders of other areas of the central nervous system. There can be absence of corpus callosum, i.e. the area made up of nerve fibres connecting the two cerebral hemispheres. There can also be malformations of the heart, face, limbs, fingers and toes.
