Diagnosis of Eye Infections
Eye infection is diagnosed based on physical examination, microbial culture and other tests.
Physical examination, patient history, microbiological testing and other tests help to diagnose eye infection.
A complete patient history including family history, details of co-morbid disease conditions and medications helps to diagnose the infection and determine its possible cause. This is followed by a complete physical examination. Tests that help to diagnose eye infections include:
- Culture: Culture of the eye discharge can help to diagnose the cause of eye infection.
- PCR: Molecular biology techniques like PCR (polymerase chain reaction) can help in the quick diagnosis of the eye infection.
- Imaging studies: Imaging studies like X-ray, CT scan and MRI can be used to study the spread of the infection into the surrounding soft tissues and bones.
