Glossary

Astrocytoma: It is a malignant tumor of nervous tissue consisting of well-differentiated astrocytes.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Uses large a magnetic field and pulses of radio waves for taking detailed pictures of organs and other parts of the body.

Positron emission tomography (PET) scans: Uses radioactive substances for seeing the working of organs and tissues.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS): A brain scan that sees biochemical processes in the brain.

Aspiration: It is the act of removing fluid, pus or serum from body cavity, by using a hollow needle or trocar attached with suction syringe.

Nutraceuticals: Food or fortified food products with extra health benefits apart from the basic nutritive value.

Neurofibromatosis: A genetic condition which affects the nervous system, muscles, bones and skin.

Li-Fraumeni Syndrome: A rare, inherited predisposition to multiple cancers, caused by an alteration in the p53 tumor suppressor gene.
