Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary Tract Infection - Diagnose

How can we Diagnose Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

The diagnosis of UTI is based on a detailed history of the symptoms given by the patient and diagnostic tests.

  • A urinalysis, to look for the presence of bacteria and 'pus' cells in the urine can be helpful in diagnosing UTI.
  • An ultrasound examination/CT scan/ MRI of the kidney and bladder maybe necessary in some patients to reveal urinary abnormalities and measure how well the kidneys work.
  • A dip stick test is also available and it can give diagnosis within a short period.

  • Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) is another test that may be performed. It involves instilling a chemical into the bladder and taking serial X-rays as the patient urinates. This test is usually undertaken if the UTI keeps occurring repeatedly in children.
  • If the above tests are positive a urine culture can reveal the infection and type of bacteria causing the infection.(6 Trusted Source

I am 31 and have had 5-6 UTI's in the past 6 months. The first, second and third times they did a urine test and it showed UTI. Never had one before, am very clean and am not sexually active. Now I have seen a urologist and am waiting 3-4 weeks to get tests done. I have abdominal pain especially in lower left side, back pain, discomfort when peeing but not burning, and blood in urine. Can you tell me what it may be. I think I may have ovarian cysts or something. Any help would be appreciated.

it is UTI and what you can do is to take in adequate diet with a lot of fluids and vitamin C. do not keep urine, void when needed.
