Hydrocele - Operation Theatre

In the Operation Theatre

Hydrocelectomy is a fairly simple procedure. It is performed under general, local, or regional anesthesia.

You will be shifted to the operation theatre on a trolley and from the trolley to the operation table.

  • An anesthesiologist (a physician who specializes in pain relief) gives anesthesia, which puts the patient to sleep.
  • Intravenous lines will be set up before the procedure starts.
  • If a General anesthesia is given you will be made to smell gas and oxygen from a mask, do- not be scared and resist it. An intervenous injection will also be given that will sedate you and make you feel sleepy.
  • If you are given Spinal or Epidural anesthesia, you will be awake during the surgery. You may hear the doctors talking and the instruments clicking. If you feel nervous tell the anesthetist who will give you sedation.
  • Occasionally a local anesthesia with a nerve block maybe used.
  • A small incision is made on the scrotum.
  • The hydrocele "sac" containing the fluid is identified.
  • The surgeon empties the fluid from the sac.
  • The sac is cut and removed or is turned inside out and folded behind the testicle.
  • The testicle is then replaced and the scrotum is stitched back together.

The procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 mins. After the procedure you will be shifted from the operation table to a trolley.

After the surgery you will be observed in the recovery room in the operation theatre complex for an hour or two before getting shifted to the wards.
