Hypermobility Syndrome - Causes

Causes

The hypermobility syndrome is known to run in families; genes are implicated in some forms of the condition.

A mutant gene that results in impaired connective tissues, such as collagen, is known to be the fundamental cause.

Hypermobility usually results from a mis- aligned joint or from an aberrantly formed bone at the joint.

An impaired or stretched ligament or abnormal proprioception (perception of joint position) may also result in hypermobility of the joints.
