Glossary

Aorta: Largest artery in the body; it carries blood from the heart's left ventricle and distributes it throughout the body through its branches.

Atresia: Congenital absence of an opening in a hollow structure.

Atria: Cavities or chambers such as the upper chambers of the heart, which receive blood from veins and pass the blood to the ventricles. (Singular form is atrium.)

Ventricle: One of the two lower chambers of the heart; or, any small cavity.

Stenosis: The narrowing or closure of an opening or passageway in the body.
