Insomnia — Prognosis
For short-term insomnia, the prognosis is very good. A short course of hypnotics will help tide over the insomniac phase.
For chronic insomnia first the underlying causative factor needs to be identified. The patient also needs to be supported with hypnotics and behavioral therapy. Resistant insomnia, which is difficult to tackle, can be gradually overcome by persistence and patience. Behavioral therapy forms the pivot of the management of insomnia as it will help to modify or strengthen the sleep pattern.
