Kawasaki Disease - Effect On The Heart

Effect on the Heart

The coronary arteries are most often affected. Part of a coronary wall can be weakened and bulge out in an aneurysm.

A blood clot can form in this weakened area and block the artery, sometimes this can lead to a heart attack. Changes like the inflammation of the heart muscles (myocarditis), or the sac surrounding the heart (pericarditis), or abnormal heart rhythms, arrhythmias can occur. Most of the heart problems go away in 5 or 6 weeks, and there's no lasting damage. Sometimes coronary artery damage continues to persist.
