Diagnosis of Cancer of Larynx or Throat Cancer or Laryngeal Cancer
Diagnosis of Cancer Larynx or Laryngeal Cancer is by clinical history followed by biopsy of the cancerous lesion. Elicitation of a proper history of the patient is followed by physical examination. Enlarged lymph nodes may be found in the neck.
The following techniques aid this process:
- Laryngoscopy: Here the doctor examines the larynx (voice box) with a mirror or with a thin, lighted tube called laryngoscope
- Endoscopy: An endoscope (a thin, lighted tube) is inserted through the mouth to aid visualization. Tissue samples and lymph nodes may also be taken for biopsy
- CT scan: In computed tomography (also called computerized tomography, or computerized axial tomography) a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body are taken from different angles
- MRI scan: MRI stands for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This is a non-invasive technique that doesn’t use ionizing radiations unlike a CT scan. Instead strong magnetic fields are used
- Biopsy: A sample of the tissue is taken for thorough study of the cancer
In addition x-ray imaging of the chest may also be ordered by your doctor.(5✔ ✔Trusted Source
