Leriche Syndrome - Symptoms and Signs

Symptoms and Signs

Typical features of Leriche syndrome include buttock claudication, impotence and decreased pulses in the lower limbs.

Symptoms and signs of Leriche syndrome include:

  • Buttock claudication - When a person exercises, the muscles require more oxygen, which is provided by an increase in blood supply to the particular area. In Leriche syndrome, it is not possible for the arteries to supply more blood to the buttocks and lower limbs due to a block in a main artery. The patient thus feels cramps, which are relieved on resting.
  • Impotence - An erection is caused by an increase in blood flow to the penis. Obstruction of blood flow to the penis in Leriche syndrome leads to impotence.
  • Weakness or absent pulses in the lower limbs.
